The Swift Parrot, restricted to south-eastern Australia and the island state of Tasmania, is critically endangered. It is migratory, wintering on the Australian mainland where it feeds on eucalypt blossoms, then heading south across Bass Strait to nest in Tasmania. Habitat loss is a factor in its rarity as well as the unfortunate introduction into Tasmania of a small predatory gliding possum that feeds on eggs and nestlings.
