The Spix’s macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) is probably the most famous parrot species, due to the tragic story of its near extinction, combined with the allure of its dreamlike blue feathers, as show in this original watercolour by Ria Winters. The Spix's Macaws last stronghold in the wild was in northeastern Bahia, Brazil. At the moment conservation organizations are working towards releasing captive individuals back into their natural habitat.
